Model 5 Prototype Wind Turbine Erected in Okanagan

2008-06-27

Quantum Wind Power Corp. has successfully erected the prototype 5 kW Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) developed in British Columbia, Canada. The turbine was tested high in the hills along a crest overlooking Okanagan Lake, Westbank, and Kelowna, British Columbia.

5kW Prototype HAWT in OkanaganSuccessful completion of the power output evaluations will allow Quantum to move forward on the final revisions of the prototype turbine and development of the production unit for volume manufacturing. The turbine started up within minutes, and at an estimated 16 mph wind speed measured 1.8 kW.  At the rated wind speed of 22 mph (10m/s) the turbine is calculated to reach 60 Hz (360 rpm) 5 kW power output. The turbine was in operation ~ 75% of the time during this test.  The unit was load tested using a resistive load bank and direct connection to a 3-ph electric motor to demonstrate the potential for water pumping without electronics.

The 5 kW Freedom Series wind turbine was developed for the light agricultural and industrial markets, as well as larger residential homes. This turbine is a showcase for the TorsionTec low-speed direct-drive permanent magnet generator and is intended for on or off-grid applications.

The 5 kW HAWT testing, final revisions, and certifications will be completed soon; with manufacturing planned in British Columbia.  A second turbine, a 50 kW Agricultural HAWT is in the design phase.

OSTEC's Silicon Vineyard Innovation Award Winners Announced at the Fifth Annual Awards Gala

April 11, 2008 - Innovative leaders in the science and technology community were recognized at the Fifth Annual Silicon Vineyard Innovation Awards Gala held last night at the Coast Capri Hotel. OSTEC, and Title Sponsor of the Silicon VineyardOSTEC 2008 Award to Quantum Wind Innovation Awards, Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP, would like to congratulate the finalists and the award winners for their achievements and their role in building this region as a centre of excellence for innovation.

"OSTEC is honoured to be able to recognize these outstanding companies and individuals, and bring their accomplishments into the spotlight. The achievements being made here in the Okanagan are truly of an international caliber," remarked Douglas MacLeod, Executive Director of OSTEC.

Last nights keynote speaker, Dr. Paul Kedroksy, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist, media personality and entrepreneur gave a fascinating presentation on 'Mythbusting in Innovation and Entrepreneurship to a captivated crowd.

OSTEC would like to thank everyone who was involved in presenting this year's program, specifically our sponsors, nominees, finalists and winners.  Without their support and participation, it would be impossible to provide this recognition and celebration of innovation in our region.

The 2008 Silicon Vineyard Innovation Award Finalists:

Innovative Organization of the Year - Quantum Wind Power Corp.

This award recognizes a leading organization (company, agency, association, education or research institution) that has demonstrated innovation, leadership, sound business practices and community involvement in the research, development and/or application of science or technology.

Rick West, President & CEO, accepted the Finalist Plaque on behalf of Quantum Wind Power Corp.

Model 50 Wind Turbine Announced

2008-03-28

Quantum Wind Power Corp. is proud to announce the Model 50 Wind Turbine, artistically designed by Steve Orzel, having a 25’ blade, and a 50’ diameter.

Depending on wind, the height will be 60’ to 80’ to center of hub.    The turbine will produce 50 kW in 10 m/s (22 mph) wind, enough power for 15 to 20, three bedroom homes with additional power sold back to the grid.50kW Production Model Turbine

The prototype development is contingent on funding with an 8 month development requirement and first deliveries to follow within 2 months.

Demand for this size turbine is substantial, it does not require environmental assessment, has low yearly maintenance cost, while producing significant power that can be sold to the grid, with installation similar to the smaller turbines.  This turbine is designed for the small to medium industrial businesses, office buildings, small sub-divisions, vacation resorts, shopping malls and agriculture from grain to live stock operations.  To date we have interest from the Caribbean, Mexico, USA and Canada.

Private Share Offering Announced

2007-04-26

Quantum Wind today issued a Private Share Offering of 1,000,000 Class “A” Voting Common Shares @ $1.00 per share to complete the development of the Model 20 (20'dia - 5 kW) Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) that is presently in development and the design and prototype phase of the Model 50 (50'dia - 50 kW) net metering HAWT, as with associated business development. The product development plan has electrical components designed for dual-purpose use in the proposed TorsionTec EV Propulsion System.

Quantum’s President and Chief Operations Officer, Rick West will launch “The Quantum ™ Foundation” An interactive webpage that looks at today’s news stories on renewable energy, Global Warming and Climate Change.

This webpage will link to such key events as the Globe Conference in Vancouver globe 2008 ~ International Environmental Tradeshow & Conference, held every second year in Vancouver British Columbia, and Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWea). and the American Wind Energy Association's (AWEA).

Stories will reach into such areas as the Central Interior of British Columbia with links to Okanagan Science and Technology Council (OSTEC) “The Silicone Valley of the North!” With strong links to such groups as the Northwest Energy Technology Consortium (NWETC) which covers six States plus British Columbia and Alberta Canada. Other links will include links to The Ontario Centre of Excellence Propelling research from idea to income. “Cultivating bolder attitudes towards invention and investment.”

This site will also follow the “Road to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games mandate” to support and integrate homegrown green technologies into their green buildings, venues and pavilions.

This website will explain the workings of wind/solar/ground thermal and (Electric Vehicle) EV propulsion as with the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology, with weekly columns by experts in the field. With "ask the experts section!"

The editorial staff and columnists will also cover “Passive Solar Housing” as well as smart building technologies and techniques. This will cover “what to look for” in purchasing a new and used home, where the use of R-2000 and Energy Star 2006 Building Systems and Standards and how these systems and standards can reduce your mortgage payback by up to five years. Why every home should have an Energy Star Rating, with a rate your home section.

Quantum Wind Power Corporation and The Quantum Foundation will go the extra step to teach and support the education and use of renewable energy technologies into today’s grade schools, technical schools, Colleges and Universities, and how this will reduce the impact of Global Warming and Climate Change.

Wind Turbines in a field
Freedom Series 50 kW Turbine

This product will resemble the turbine pictured above. Our turbines incorporate the innovative “direct drive Permanent Magnet Generator” by TorsionTec

Due to its “gearless” nature, our turbines are designed to have a 30-year life span with only minor maintenance. Reliability is also increased thanks to the use of electronics instead of mechanics to condition the power for AC supply requirements and/or to synchronize with the utility grid.
